A 5-part webinar learning series focusing on all the steps from choosing and unpacking the PHE curricular learning standards, to planning learning experiences, to assessing and supporting student growth, all the way up to and including how to communicate student learning using the BC Reporting Guidelines. 

Overview of the 5-part learning series

This learning series is designed to support K-12 teachers in their efforts to teach, assess, grade, and communicate student learning in their PHE class. Each webinar will focus on one theme and will provide practical approaches/practices for teachers to use. 

To get the best experience throughout this learning series, it is recommended to attend all 5 webinars.  However, that is not a requirement and teachers can pick and choose which topic/webinar best suits their interests.

Assessment Foundations: Approaches and Practices to Promote Learning

In this session, we’ll look at foundational assessment principles and approaches to ensure our practices support and promote student learning. 

Specifically, we’ll clarify what formative and summative assessment is, different approaches we can use for all aspects of our PHE classes, and more. 

The content in this session will carry on throughout the remainder of the learning series webinars.

In this session, we’ll look at what to assess, including the curriculum learning standards and learning (work) habits separately. 

Samples will be shared as well as references to the BC Reporting Policy document.

Ways to Assess Student Learning in PHE

Session overview

In this session, we’ll explore how we can assess student learning and work/learning habits separately, including different types of assessment tools and approaches. 

We’ll also look at ways to bring students into the assessment process when it comes to personal fitness and more.

Using the Proficiency Scale at the Class Level

Session overview

In this session, we will clarify what a proficiency scale is, explore how it can be effectively used in the classroom to inform teaching and learning, and how to effectively use the proficiency scale for summative assessment purposes.

Using the Proficiency Scale to Communicate Student Learning

Session overview

In this session, we will make sense of what the proficiency scale is for grading and reporting purposes and how to use it to determine and communicate summary grades reflective of student learning in PHE.
